Holiday Parties

Holiday Parties are happening and it's a lot of fun! It's also tough to turn down the unhealthy foods without ThinStick though. It's the perfect time of the year for ThinStick! Add a couple packets to your water and you'll be in control all night long!

Tips from JJ Virgin's LeanZine:

Don't Be a Dip About Dip. If it is a choice between hummus and spinach-artichoke dip, choose heart-healthy, high-fiber hummus rather than the latter which is loaded down with cheese and mayo. Dipping with crudites rather than crackers is a nice way to up your veggie quotient as well, and it will also help fill you up.

Yes, I'm Calling You Shrimp. The shrimp cocktail gets high marks, as does the smoked salmon. Instead of the high sugar cocktail sauce try dipping into some spicy salsa or even going without the dip. If there is some guacamole on hand, try a bit as a nice dip or even mix it with a tiny bit of salsa for some zip.

No Piggy. Another no-no is your standard party fare of pigs-in-a-blanket. I don't know about you, but I don't like to eat anything that has the word pigs in it. You can try a bacon wrapped scallop because of the relatively small amount of bacon provides loads of flavor, while the scallop is a high quality protein source that also contains omega three fats.

Aunt Jenny’s Famous Meatballs. No offense to your relatives, but those meatballs are probably loaded with bread and eggs. Eat them in small doses. Tell Aunt Jenny they're delicious and you've had five of them already. It's a small white lie that won't get you in trouble unless she's keeping count.

Mini Quiche. There is nothing really mini about this food and I'd say to skip it. Plus, who even knows what the heck is in these tiny pies? My rule is if I can't figure out what's in it then I'm not eating it.

Not So Nuts. Go nuts for a quick grab food because nuts have protein, fiber and good fats. However, you can't graze on nuts all night long because too much of a good thing is...too much. Try just eating 10 nuts and don't lose count by standing by the nuts and turbo loading them into your mouth as you talk. Those 10 nuts will fill you up and are a nice tasty treat.

Step Away. It's always helpful to step away from the buffet table. Is there a nice patio area where you can go outside and talk? Can you go into the den and find some old friends? Consciously make a decision that you've eaten enough and amuse yourself by talking, dancing, catching up or even playing DJ. You're not there to just eat, but to greet old chums.

End 2009 Healthy with these 4 tips

Great Health Tips from: JJ Virgin, CNS

End 2009 healthy and Start 2010 healthy
  • Introduce a new veggie into your life each week. Make this fun as you stand in the fresh produce aisle of your supermarket. Choose something that looks intriguing and then find a healthy way to make it. You can't go wrong by steaming veggies or stir frying them in a bit of EVOO (extra virgin olive oil). If you're a parent, teach your children that veggies make us strong and help us have great energy. Remind them that veggies also help them grow. If your child is making that twisted, this-veggie-will-make-me-pass-out face then ask them to eat three bites before deciding if it's good or yucky. I love to add Italian spices to veggies and you can even sprinkle a bit of cheese on top with marinara sauce to disguise the veggies for your kids.
  • Make sure, especially during this hectic season, to keep some 911 emergency healthy foods on you for snacks. You won't be tempted to eat that piece of gummy shopping mall pizza if you're armed with better choices that are easy to carry. Bring nuts, veggies and an apple with you for 911 moments. These are also great for long car rides and for plane trips. If you have a snack at the ready, you will avoid fast food stops or quick snack foods that are almost always just a carb bomb. Remember that you don't really need to snack. If you eat three good meals each day you will be satiated full and have great energy. You won't even want that snack. Do remember to add protein and high fiber foods (veggies, legumes, nuts and berries top that list) to each meal because they will keep you feeling fuller longer.
  • Remember that Julia Roberts film “Sleeping with the Enemy?” Well, I refuse to sleep in the same house with the enemy. This means that I don't play eating roulette with myself and keep my favorite chocolate or ice cream in the house. Once in awhile, if I have a yen for it then I'll just go out for a treat. I'm not a big believer in this idea that your will power will win out over those Famous Amos cookies in the cabinet. Famous Amos isn't going to be living with you anymore. By the way, when you have this occasional treat have a mini-sized portion or three bites of it. I promise you will get the taste and feel satisfied without over-doing it.
  • Finally, making small, conscious choices as 2009 winds to an end is a great way to mentally get ready for additional lateral shifts we'll make in 2010. Be proud of each change you make because it's a wonderful accomplishment. It's also the best gift you can give yourself.

Today's ThinStick Testimonial

Written to JJ Virgin regarding Metabolic's product, ThinStick...

JJ:

I have often wondered how when thin people had tempting food placed in front of them, they couldn't eat it unless they were hungry. I have no problem eating at any time, anywhere, providing it is something that I like.

I had eaten a late breakfast and was meeting a friend to see a movie at 1 pm and I didn't want to watch a movie and listen to my stomach growl, so I mixed a thin stick in milk and went on my merry way. My friend is one of those really thin people with an over-active thyroid, so she can eat all the time and not worry about her weight. She had a large soda and popcorn, which I normally would have been tempted to share. (This theatre has an assortment of flavors to sprinkle on your popcorn!)

I not only was not hungry, I actually felt that I absolutely did not want to eat. It wasn't like when you eat too much and you are so stuffed that you can't eat, I was very comfortable but had no desire to eat. Amazing!

Later in the day, I was hungry enough to eat but was able to control what and how much I ate. After using ThinSticks for 3 days, I have lost 2 pounds. I definitely like this product!!

JJ Virgin's Five Favorite Fool-Proof Tips!!

My Five Favorite Fool-Proof Tips for Staying Fit on the Road

Written by JJ Virgin PhD, CNS, Celebrity Nutrition & Fitness Authority

1) Repeat after me: “No Red-Eyes.” Unless you are flying in your own private jet for more than 9 hours you will have a bad nights’ sleep and start your vacation or work week off on a bad note. It always sounds like a great idea until you are actually living it. Instead, I turn the plane into my own personal office and bring all of my writing and reading that I need to catch up on (I take extra batteries and plugs too) and fly during my most productive hours. I use my iPOD to create my office “walls.” This way once I land I can immediately shift into “escape” mode now that I have gotten my work done.

2) If your travel includes a time zone change, start shifting the day or two before by altering your bedtime, wake time, and meal times by an hour. Use Thin Sticks (my favorite fool-proof all natural appetite suppressant and cravings crusher) to help your appetite cooperate with you.

3) Pack the Bullet. I travel with my Magic Bullet Blender and carry sandwich baggies prepared with a blend of my Olympian Labs Prescribed Nutrition shake stirred with some added fiber. I’ve learned to include a few extra baggies in case I end up missing a meal somewhere in transit or if I show up late at my hotel and want to have a shake instead of a whole meal. I also carry EmergenC™ Packets with me to kick up my immune system and keep my stress at bay as well as some of my favorite protein energy bars so that I never get stranded and fall victim to the airline “snack pack” out of desperation.

4) Plan your workouts. Whenever possible I workout prior to getting on the plane, especially on long flights. If the flight is too early I schedule in a workout when I arrive. I always make sure that the hotel where I am staying has a fitness center (as opposed to the dreaded fitness room containing a lone treadmill and a broken tv) or access to a nearby gym. If all else fails you will find me in the stairwell doing my bursts. If I am driving I bring my Xiser along. It weighs under 20 pounds so some of my male clients actually pack it; I unfortunately have far too many shoes that I MUST pack to be able to squeeze it in….

5) Carry your safe filtered water bottle along but remember to empty it BEFORE you go through the security line! Security will confiscate it… I’ve learned this one personally. I have also found that most hotel gyms have a water cooler so you can always locate a great source of clean filtered water for bottle refills, and hence yet another reason to make a visit there!

MSG in a Bottle ( From JJ Virgin)

MSG in a Bottle - The Hidden Danger of this Ubiquitous Food Flavoring

"Before you dive face first into your Peking duck, listen up. A recent study out of the University of North Carolina cites what animal studies have hinted at for years: MSG (aka monosodium glutamate) could be a factor in weight gain. The study focused on 750 Chinese men and women, ages 40-59, living in 3 rural villages in north and south China. Those participants who used the highest amounts of MSG had nearly 3 times the incidence of overweight as those who did not use MSG, even when physical activity, total caloric intake, and other possible explanations for body mass differences were taken into account.

We all know of someone who has had a bad reaction to MSG; in fact it's suggested that 25- 30% of all Americans suffer some sort of effect from MSG (e.g., palpitations and migraine headaches), and as many as 30 percent are extra sensitive to it if they consume more than 5 grams at one sitting! Unfortunately, these facts haven't seemed to slow down the food industry one bit. Americans consumed about 1 million pounds of MSG in 1950, and today that number has increased by a factor of 300!

So what exactly is monosodium glutamate? MSG is a flavor enhancer in foods--some believe it may even provide a fifth basic taste sensation (in addition to sweet, sour, salt, and bitter), what the Japanese call "umami" (roughly translated as "tastiness"). It is considered an "excitotoxin," since its action in the body is to excite neurotransmitters (important brain chemicals), causing nerve cells to discharge and also exciting nerves related to taste. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes MSG as "naturally occurring," and has it on the GRAS (generally regarded as safe) list. However, studies have shown that when MSG was ingested by lab rats, the hypothalamic regulation of the appetite was damaged by MSG, causing them to double their intake of food and triple their intake of fluids! Given these studies, as well as the prevalence of side effects reported, no amount of MSG appears to be a safe amount.

Eliminating MSG from the diet is much easier said than done, since there's no list of MSG-safe foods in existence. Start by reading the ingredient list; but understand that there will still be many foods that have MSG hidden inside other ingredients in the list (even products labeled "no MSG added" can still contain these hidden sources). Likely culprits include seasonings, flavor packets that you add to tacos, stews, soups, gravies, roasts, dips, etc., and canned soups and noodle packets. Anything that is expected to have a long shelf life is likely to include MSG in it.

Your best bet is to go organic and make things from scratch. Stick with whole foods that look pretty much the way they do when you pluck them from the ground. Avoid canned, boxed, bottled and frozen ANYTHING. Unless you are packaging your own foods, you have no clue what's in there!"
